Cambridge Summer Schools

CATS Cambridge and CSVPA

Our Cambridge Summer Schools provide UK and international students aged 15-18 with the chance to combine an exciting vacation in Cambridge with a specialised study programme.  

You can study with us for anything from one to seven weeks and can mix and match different programmes if you choose e.g. art and design one week, English language another week and so on.

There are two main types of programme:

The programmes include:

  • excursions to theatres, museums or theme parks
  • social programme including welcome party, international evenings and discos
  • day trips to London, Canterbury or Stratford-upon-Avon.

Classic English course

Who is it for?

  • Younger learners looking for a 'taste' of British Life and Culture.
  • Students who want a greater focus on learning English, or who wish to sit an exam, should consider the Intensive English course.
  • If you are looking for a course to prepare for futher academic study in English you should consider the Academic English course.

The course
Our Classic course offers 20 lessons of English per week plus a full programme of social activities and excursions.

Lessons are lively, effective and enoyable. We emphasise communication skills and building confidence in speaking a new language.

This course is accredited by the British Council and English UK.

Intensive English

Who is it for?

  • If you are looking for a course to prepare for futher academic study in English you should consider the Academic English course.
The course
Our Intensive English course offers 30 lessons per week, with evening social activities and full day excursions at the weekends.

Students are able to enrol on the Trinity Spoken English examinations, which are an internationally recognised measure of communicative ability.

This course is accredited by the British Council and English UK.

Academic English

Who is it for?

  • Students who would like to prepare for futher academic study in English.
  • Students who want an intensive introduction to English but are not at this stage planning to study in English, should consider the Intensive English course.
  • If you are a younger learner looking for a 'taste' of British Life and Culture, you should consider the Classic course.
The course
Our Academic English programme prepares students for acaedmic study using the English language. 

It is a serious course intended to provide students with the core language, study skills and confidence required before they undertake a programme of a-levels, International Baccalaureate or University Foundation.

Students will require minimum IELTS 4.0 or equivalent. Students will be placed in classes suitable to their level, with a course specially tailored to their individual needs.

The programme focuses on the following areas:
  • Academic English language: study skills, vocabulary, grammar, essay construction, research, note taking
  • Communication skills: interaction with classmates, discussion and conversation techniques
  • Cultural familiarisation: living and studying in the UK
  • Assignments: students may be asked to complete a Number of projects in pairs or groups
During the Summer, students may join the Cambridge Summer School evening activities (compulsory for students under 17 years).

Optional weekend excursions are available for an additional charge and may be pre-booked.

Programmes lasting longer that 7 weeks are available as an 'Academic English Term'. Please contact CATS Cambridge for more details.

Accommodation & Meals

We take great care to ensure that students are safe, comfortable and happy. Students stay in residential accommodation about 20-25 minutes' walk from the campus. Residential Houses vary in size, accommodating from 5 to 40 students. Most rooms are single with private shower / wc.

Meals
Students have breakfast, lunch and evening meals in the new cafeteria on campus.

Excursions
Packed lunches are provided for the optional full-day excursions.

Special diets
Students with special medical or religious dietary requirements must inform us when booking.
