St
Margaret’s School
St Margaret's is a girls’ independent
school of around 700 pupils, founded in 1800 by James
Buchanan. Located in the southern part of the city,
it is about 10 minutes by bus to the city centre.
The
school buildings are set amidst the Victorian residences
of the Newington area and consist of accommodation
blocks, classroom blocks, and the school hall/gymnasium.
Accommodation
Residential accommodation is provided in flats belonging
to the University of Edinburgh. The flats are single
rooms (mostly five rooms per flat) with one shower and
two toilets and a kitchen/sitting area in each flat.
The flats are a 20-minute walk from St Margaret's
School but students may use the frequent bus service
if they prefer. A bus pass is provided.
There is also limited en-suite accommodation available
in twin, triple and quadruple rooms in St Hilary’s
House which is located opposite St Margaret’s
School. There are coin-operated laundry facilities
in the flats: there are none in St Margaret’s
School.
Students may also opt for host family accommodation.
Sports
facilities
The school owns a small sports hall. In addition, our
students can play tennis locally, and swim at the nearby
Commonwealth Swimming Pool.
Activities
A full programme is arranged to include the local sights
in Edinburgh along with a varied evening programme.
Students travelling through London may book a visit
to the city in advance, with accommodation and optional
sightseeing.
