Canterbury
Canterbury has a history that goes back over 2,000 years. The Romans built a city here, calling it Durovernum, and the Saxons followed in the 5th century after the fall of the Roman Empire. AD 597 heralded a spiritual rebirth when Archbishop Augustine and his followers established the first Canterbury Cathedral. Famous even before medieval times as a great religious centre, the murder in the Cathedral in 1170 of Archbishop Thomas à Becket began a tradition of pilgrimage. Now modern pilgrims in the form of tourists and students are drawn to the City by its blend of medieval atmosphere and modern amenities, excellent shopping centre, restaurants and pubs.
