Welcome to Edinburgh - Scotland's capital

Edinburgh, capital of Scotland, has a glorious setting with unexpected views of the sea and hills wherever you happen to be, and a skyline dominated by the great rock on which the castle stands. From here, the medieval Old Town runs down to the Palace of Holyrood House, and through the heart of the Old Town runs the Royal Mile, lined with historic buildings, such as the Outlook Tower, the tall tenement of Gladstone’s Land, Lady Stair’s House and a number of excellent museums.

Edinburgh’s second main area is the Georgian New Town, a place of elegant squares and terraces built for the city’s merchants in the late 18th century. There is a third town as well: the districts of grand Victorian houses. Always fascinating to visit, Edinburgh becomes a riot of theatre and music, on and off the streets, during the International Festival in August

St Margaret’s School
St Margaret's is a girls’ independent school of around 700 pupils, founded in 1800 by James Buchanan. Located in the southern part of the city, it is about 10 minutes by bus to the city centre.
The school buildings are set amidst the Victorian residences of the Newington area and consist of accommodation blocks, classroom blocks, and the school hall/gymnasium.

Accommodation
Residential accommodation is provided in flats belonging to the University of Edinburgh. The flats are single rooms (mostly five rooms per flat) with one shower and two toilets and a kitchen/sitting area in each flat. The flats are a 20-minute walk from St Margaret's School but students may use the frequent bus service if they prefer. A bus pass is provided.

There is also limited en-suite accommodation available in twin, triple and quadruple rooms in St Hilary’s House which is located opposite St Margaret’s School. There are coin-operated laundry facilities in the flats: there are none in St Margaret’s School.

Students may also opt for host family accommodation, for which bus passes will be provided.
