Specialist options available

As a creative individual, the Art & Design Summer School gives you the opportunity to explore artistic disciplines you may not have considered. You can stay for between one and six weeks, choosing a different specialism each week, or staying with your favourite.

For 2010 the following options are available:

» Option A: Fashion and Textiles

Offering an introduction to fashion design and illustration. Experiment with:

  • mixed-media techniques
  • fabric manipulation and draping
  • machining
  • garment manufacture
  • freehand embroidery
  • hand stitching
  • dyeing

As a project you will make a simple garment using textile techniques, fabric dyes and trimmings.

» Option B: Video and Animation

Based in our media studios, you will have the chance to create either individual or small group projects. You can choose either live action or animation, using digital video cameras and editing equipment.

Each student will take away a video or DVD copy of their work plus a compilation of the group projects.

» Option C: Digital Photography

You will create a digital portfolio using Cambridge as your inspiration.

You will learn how to:

  • use different digital camera settings for best effect
  • manipulate images on a computer
  • print your finished images electronically

» Option D: Film Photography

Using Cambridge as your inspiration, you will create a portfolio of images under the guidance of a professional Cambridge-based photographer.

You will learn:

  • how to take and develop your own photographs
  • how to progress from inital concept to printed image
  • different developing processes including wet process, black and white and colour in the darkroom.

Students are asked to bring a traditional Film SLR camera if they have one.

» Option E: Art & Design

This programme introduces students to a wide range of materials, techniques and artists. Each week is different and, if taken as a 6-week programme, it can provide an excellent start to future study in Art & Design.
