This course is designed to provide a broad working knowledge of a range of disciplines within Art & Design.
Courses run through July and August. You can stay for anything from 1 to 6 weeks and choose a different specialism each week, or just stick with your favourite.
Weekly specialist options:
Fashion
This covers fashion design and illustration, mixed-media techniques, fabric manipulation and draping. You will learn about machining techniques, garment manufacture and freehand embroidery. For a project you will customise a white T-shirt using fabric dyes, paints and trimmings.
Illustration & Graphics
You will be introduced to 2D design and commercial art. You will learn to use your sketch book to develop ideas using a wide variety of media. Most students will produce at least two finished pieces.
Jewellery Making
Create exciting contemporary jewellery using different techniques and materials. You will be introduced to artists and cultures who will provide inspiration for your own designs. View course outline.
Painting & Printmaking
Using techniques from painting and printmaking, you will create work based on personal experience using Cambridge and the local environment as a starting point. Back in the workshop you will be introduced to etching and mono printing and offered a wide variety of paint techniques including acrylic and watercolour.
Photography
Using both digital and wet processes and taking inspiration from historic Cambridge, you will create a portfolio of images. You will learn all about taking photographs from initial concept to printed image.
Sculpture
Primarily an experimental course, this options will encouraged you to play with materials and to create an individual project using resistant and non-resistant materials. Installation and site-specific work will be encouraged alongside more traditional sculptual expression. View course outline.
Textiles
An experimental approach to creating textiles through the use of machine and hand stitching as an expressive medium. The sewing machine will be your main tool, and techniques will include free machine embroidery and dyeing.
Video & Animation
Based in the media studios you will have the chance to create either individual or small group projects. You can choose either live action or animation using digital video cameras and editing equipment. Each student will take away a video or DVD copy of their work.
