Top Tips for applying to US Universities

At CATS Cambridge our full time Higher Education department goes above and beyond the traditional careers advice service found in many schools.

Our dedicated team provides help at every stage of the selection, application and interview process from UCAS forms, personal statements, additional reading and practice interviews.

In addition, we provide advice about applying to specialist programmes and destinations, bringing in experts to help our students achieve their aims. Recently, we invited Bethany Schweitzer, an educational consultant in the USA, to advise students on applications to US Universities.

Here are Bethany's top 5 tips:

"When considering applying to universities the US:

  • Select schools based upon your main subject interest (in the USA this is called you 'major').  Although an Ivy League school will give you an excellent education, sometimes it might not be the best school for your subject. There are thousands of universities. Take the time to find the right fit for you and your subejct.
  • Spend time taking virtual tours of the different schools - most will have this feature on their website. Figure out whether or not you will be able to feel comfortable and at home at the schools you are considering.
  • Apply early. Some schools have rolling admission - the earlier you apply, the greater chances you have for admission and scholarships.
  • Your application essay is your chance to let the admission committee get to know you. Have other people read your essay and give you feedback before submitting your application. Don’t be afraid to be creative - your creativity may catch the attention of the admission committee and may help gain you admission.
  • Take the time to prepare for the SAT or ACT exam. If the schools you are applying to accept both tests, consider taking both the SAT and ACT - you can then submit the higher of the two scores."
