BA (Hons) Fashion

Goddess of Water  Goddess of Air  Goddess of Earth  Goddess of Fire

This exciting degree is focused on developing design skills in the context of the mainstream fashion and clothing world.

  • Behind the scenes at London Fashion Week: students benefit from the 'sharp end' of design and promotion through involvement behind the scenes with London Fashion week and other similar events.
  • Get the attention of buyers: students are taught to visualise their designs as products intended for sale from the outset.
  • Learn from professionals: students are taught by nationally and internationally recognised directional fashion practitioners, providing 'inside' knowledge and experience of the fashion world.

The course is designed to develop your creative abilities within an industrial and commercial context so that designing, selling and marketing are all seen as connected creative pursuits.

You will take advantage of the full range of workshops and processes that are available in our new state of the art studios, integrating these techniques into clothing and accessories design and including:

  • the latest digital processes
  • printmaking
  • textiles
  • photography
  • video

Course outline
Year 1

The first year is spent learning essential skills and developing your background knowledge through research. You will also gain live work experience in industry.

  • Fashion clothing research
  • craft skills: pattern cutting, stitch, use of professional machines, drawing skills, decorative stitch
  • IT skills
  • design process
  • historical / contemporary practice
  • live jobs and work experience.

Year 2

Building on what you have learned in your first year, during year two you will focus on developing your own projects including:

  • Expanded design and technical mix:
integration of business, professional and production knowledge and skills.
  • Live projects.
  • Developing external links with industry.
  • Study based on real-world partnerships of design, retail and manufacture.

Year 3
This year supports you in a more independent direction. In your final semester you will determine the emphasis of your portfolio, selecting from design and related activities to produce work directly related to your future career.

This final year of study takes place on campus at the University of Hertfordshire. However, alternative options are available:

  • move on to our partner university, the University of Hertfordshire, for final year of study
  • transfer to another university for final year of study
  • take the University Diploma at the end of Year 2 and go straight into work.

End of year Fashion Show
At the end of each year our students are able to showcase their designs in a full scale fashion show. This year's show took place on a floating catwalk and was a sell-out event. The theme this year was The Elements, and we gave our BA Students the challenge of designing the Goddess of each Element - you can see some of the BA collection at the top of this page.

In your final year, the standard catwalk show is replaced by multi-dimensional promotional events combining innovative live shows, display and multimedia.
